What are PNG and JPG files?

PNG (Portable Network Graphics) is a lossless image format created in 1996. It stores every pixel exactly, which means no quality is ever lost when saving — but the files are large. PNG is the best choice for screenshots, graphics, logos, and anything with text or sharp edges where even tiny compression artefacts would be visible. It also supports full alpha transparency. A typical photo saved as PNG can be 5–15 MB.

JPG (Joint Photographic Experts Group) has been the standard for photographs since 1992. It uses lossy compression that discards fine detail the human eye barely notices, achieving file sizes 5–10× smaller than PNG at comparable visual quality. A photograph that is 10 MB as PNG is often under 1 MB as JPG. The trade-off is that JPG doesn't support transparency and each re-save degrades quality slightly — so it's not suited for editing workflows.

Convert PNG to JPG when you need to share a photo by email, upload to a platform with a file size limit, or reduce storage.
